Pectra

Overview

Pectra (Prague-Electra) is a major Ethereum upgrade activated on May 7, 2025, the next dual-layer hard fork following Dencun. Prague refers to the execution layer upgrade, Electra refers to the consensus layer upgrade, and the two combined are abbreviated as Pectra.

The upgrade was activated on Ethereum mainnet at 10:05:11 UTC on May 7, 2025 (epoch 364032), introducing 11 key Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) focused on improvements to scalability, security, staking operations, and developer tools. Pectra is the Ethereum upgrade containing the most EIPs to date.

Core EIP Proposals

Account Abstraction and User Experience

EIP-7702: Temporary Account Delegation

This is an important step toward widespread account abstraction, enabling users to enhance their Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) with smart contract functionality. Smart accounts enabled through EIP-7702 will support: - Gas sponsorship: Allows third parties to pay transaction fees - Batch transactions: Execute multiple operations at once - Key-based authentication: Use modern authentication methods like Passkeys - Transaction simulation: Preview transaction results before execution

This significantly lowers the barrier for users to interact with Ethereum and improves user experience.

Staking Improvements

EIP-7251: Increase Maximum Effective Balance

Increases the maximum effective balance per validator from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH: - Validators can stake between 32 and 2048 ETH in a single validator - Stakers running multiple validators can consolidate them into one - Simplifies operations and reduces network overhead - Reduces the size of the validator set, improving network efficiency

EIP-7002: Execution Layer Triggered Exits

Introduces a new contract allowing validator exits to be triggered using execution layer withdrawal credentials: - Stakers can exit validators by calling a special contract function - No need to access the consensus layer client - Simplifies the operational process for staking service providers - Increases staking flexibility

EIP-6110: On-Chain Deposit Processing

A new method for passing deposits from the execution layer to the consensus layer: - Allows instant deposit processing - Reduces implementation complexity - Improves deposit confirmation reliability - Reduces validator activation wait times

Layer 2 Scalability

EIP-7691: Increase Blob Capacity

Increases the average blob count from 3 to 6 and the maximum from 6 to 9: - Double throughput: Doubles Ethereum's blob throughput - Lower L2 costs: Provides more data availability space for Rollups - Future expansion: Lays the foundation for further expansion (such as PeerDAS) - Dynamic adjustment: EIP-1559 based blob fee market

EIP-7623: Increase Calldata Pricing

Increases Gas prices for Calldata: - Calldata increases from 4/16 Gas/byte to 10/40 Gas/byte - Only applies to data-intensive transactions - Reduces maximum block size from 7.15MB to 0.75MB - Incentivizes using blobs instead of calldata - Encourages L2 migration to cheaper blob storage

Developer Tools

EIP-2537: BLS12-381 Curve Precompile

Adds precompiled contracts for BLS12-381 curve operations: - Improved cryptographic capabilities - Supports more efficient signature aggregation - Enhances privacy protection features - Reduces Gas costs for ZK proofs

EIP-2935: Historical Block Hash Storage

Extends on-chain storage of historical block hashes from 51 minutes (256 blocks) to 27 hours (8191 blocks): - Improves reliability of applications dependent on historical data - Simplifies state invalidity proofs - Supports longer time range BLOCKHASH operations - Paves the way for future stateless Ethereum

Other EIPs: - EIP-7685: Request Engine API - EIP-7840: Add Blob Schedule to CL - EIP-7742: Unconstrained Blob Gas Price

Impact and Significance

User Experience Improvement

EIP-7702 makes smart account functionality more accessible, lowering the barrier to using Ethereum. Users can enjoy Web2-like convenience while maintaining the advantages of decentralization and self-custody.

Staking Ecosystem Optimization

Staking-related improvements reduce the complexity of running validators and increase flexibility. This helps attract more staking participants, enhancing the network's security and decentralization.

Layer 2 Scaling Acceleration

The increase in blob capacity provides Rollups with more affordable data availability space, while the calldata pricing adjustment incentivizes L2 migration to more economical blob storage solutions. This directly lowers L2 transaction fees.

Developer Tool Enhancement

New precompiled contracts and historical data storage improvements provide developers with more powerful tools, supporting the construction of more complex and innovative applications.

Relationship with Other Upgrades

Inherits Dencun: Further expands capacity building on the blob foundation introduced by Dencun

Paves the Way for Fusaka: Lays the groundwork for PeerDAS and other features in the next upgrade (Fusaka)

Advances the Roadmap: Aligns with the goals of Ethereum's "The Surge" (scaling) and "The Scourge" (MEV governance) roadmap

Community Response

The Pectra upgrade received widespread community support and is considered one of the most important upgrades in Ethereum history. In particular, account abstraction and staking improvements are seen as key milestones addressing long-standing user experience and staking barrier issues.
