EIP Overview

Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) describe standards for the Ethereum platform, including core protocol specifications, client APIs, and contract standards. Anyone can participate in improving Ethereum by submitting a pull request with an improvement proposal to the Ethereum EIPs GitHub repository. You can read EIP-1 to learn how to submit an improvement proposal.

Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP)

Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) are standards for suggesting potential new features or processes for Ethereum. EIPs contain technical specifications for proposed improvements and serve as the "source of truth" for the community. Network upgrades and application standards for Ethereum are discussed and developed through the EIP process.

Anyone in the Ethereum community can create an EIP. Guidelines for writing Ethereum Improvement Proposals are provided in EIP-1. An EIP should primarily include concise technical specifications and provide some rationale. The creator of an EIP is responsible for building consensus within the community and documenting dissenting opinions. Historically, most EIP creators have been application or protocol developers, as submitting a high-quality EIP requires strong technical expertise.
