DeFi Overview

DeFi (Decentralized Finance)

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is an emerging financial ecosystem based on blockchain technology, particularly the Ethereum network. DeFi aims to provide traditional financial services such as lending, trading, and insurance through smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps), without relying on traditional financial institutions and intermediaries.

Advantages over traditional finance:

  1. Permissionless: Anyone can access and use DeFi protocols without going through complex review and approval processes.
  2. Transparency: DeFi protocol code is open and transparent, with all transactions and operations recorded on the blockchain, available for anyone to audit.
  3. Autonomy: Users retain full control over their assets without needing to rely on third-party institutions for asset management.
  4. Global Access: DeFi protocols can be accessed seamlessly worldwide, eliminating geographical and national financial barriers.

Main DeFi Products

Decentralized Exchanges (DEX): Allow users to trade cryptocurrencies directly without intermediaries. Examples: Uniswap, SushiSwap, Balancer. Learn more by referring to DEX.

Lending Platforms: Allow users to lend and borrow crypto assets, with smart contracts automatically managing collateral and interest rates. Examples: Aave, Compound, MakerDAO.

Stablecoins: Cryptocurrencies with stable prices, typically pegged to fiat currencies (such as the US dollar). Usually employ collateral backing or centralized institutional pegging. Examples: DAI, USDC, USDT.

Synthetic Assets: Digital assets created through smart contracts whose value is pegged to real-world assets (such as stocks, commodities). Examples: Synthetix, Mirror Protocol.

Insurance Protocols: Provide protection for DeFi users, covering risks such as smart contract vulnerabilities and hacker attacks. Examples: Nexus Mutual, Cover Protocol.

Yield Aggregators: Automatically optimize users' asset allocation to achieve the highest yields. Examples: Yearn Finance, Harvest Finance.
